Other markers from this cemetery are at Live Oak Baptist Church and others are represented by cenotaphs at Princeville.4,5 He There is a Warren Alford in the 1880 census as a head of household with his wife Jane M. Alford with children and another person with relationship listed as Other named Clarky. This matches his mothers name and this could well show his mother living with him in her later years. He Based on his cemetery marker I believe that he served in the Civil War in the Company B, Siege Train in the Confederate States of America. It is even possible he died in the war as his marker gives no dates. A Siege Train is a collection of pieces of Artillery which are combined into a special force for a specific purpose, in this case to break the hold of Northern forces on Charleston. Company B, Siege Train was commanded by Major Edward Manigault. In 1986 the University of South Carolina Press published the journal of Major Edward MAnigault and contins some information on the subject.6,2 |

![]() William Tillman Smith's Social Security number was 247-66-8084. His South Carolina Driver's License number was 1024730. He was 5 foot 9 inches tall and weighed 180 lbs. in 1976. William Tillman Smith applied at the Horry County Courthouse for a Marriage License. He was 28 years old and one month. He was then a resident of Horry County, South Carolina. Mollie Graham was then 20 years old and 1 month. She was then a resident of Adriau(?), South Carolina. The License was issued on 3 September, 1919 by J.S. Vaught, Probate Judge for Horry County, South Carolian. The License is on file at the Horry County, Courthouse under file number 2429. W.T. Smith, as called by his friends, was a math teacher and a land surveyor. He also sold fertilizer to the other local farmers. The way the system worked was for Tillman to give a farmer some fertilizer for his crops but not collect any money for it until the crops came in. When the crops were harvested Tillman sometimes would have collected some rather large sums of money, sometimes as much as $80,000 which in went to Conway and deposited into the bank. He would then have to pay his debt to the fertilizer company. Another way Tillman made money was that during the depression he had some money put away that he kept burried in the back yard. He hid this money because he did not want people to know he had it. In those days everyone was having a bad time and everyone was expected to pitch in and help your neighbor. When some other farmers elected to sell there land Tillman would purchase their property for some very low price. Then we would refer to the Farmer's Almanac and find a period of time when there would supposedly be some bad weather. Then he would sign a contract with someone for lumber rights with a time limit involved. If the Almanac was right, they could never met the quanity required for clearing in the time alotted by the contract and Tillman would once again have the land and the lumber. Then he would sell it again and again. Every once in a while the Almanac was wrong or the buyer was a little better than Tillman had thought and the lumber would get successfully harvested. William Tillman Smith was a Mason and arose to the position of Master Mason. It is also believed that he was a member of the Klu Klux Klan in his younger days. He never remarried after his wife died, but remained at home living with his oldest daughter, Dally Bain Smith, who never married herself. Although he never remarried after the death of Mollie, he was routinely seen in the company of Mrs. Page, who was one of his childhood sweathearts and was with him during his death. This author remembers W.T. Smith quite well, he was my grandfather. He was always a kind an gentle man to me and I miss him.
